How the largest warehouses in the world operate

Category Property Industry News

When you think of the biggest buildings in the world you think of skyscrapers and historical monuments such as the Eiffel Tower and the Burj Khalifa. However, some of the most expansive properties are not famous - they are warehouses. Intended for the use of manufacturing and assembling, the largest warehouses are the best examples of the modern industrial world. Discover how the Boeing Everett Factory and other large warehouses function optimally.

Defining the importance of the Boeing Everett warehouse

The Boeing Everett Factory is the largest warehouse in terms of usable volume. It was built in 1976 and has since undergone many renovations and additions. The Boeing Everett Factory covers a floor space of 398,000m2 with a cubic volume of over 13.3 million m3. The average height of the warehouse is 33,4m, which caters to the huge machinery and transportation of the impressive aircraft that are built and repaired here.

The Boeing Production Facility is cited as having the largest space for manufacturing abilities. Other production areas at the site include the flight line and delivery centre and the paint hangars. The warehouse is a technical and supply chain marvel as it continues to produce quality aircraft of differing sizes such as the 744, 746, 747, 777 and 787 airplanes. The company is constantly innovating in exciting sectors such as aerospace engineering, commercial, defence and sustainability offerings.

What it takes to function

With such a broad spectrum of pinnacles to hit, it's no wonder that Boeing Everett requires a massive space as their base. The warehouse operates like a well-oiled machine, with factory staff assigned individual roles to perform with the help of efficient equipment. There are currently more than 30,000 employees at the Boeing Everett warehouse. The staff complement has its own security team, fire department, daycare centre and fitness centre. This motivating work/life balance helps employees give 110% to their role. Valued workers are more likely to churn out excellent results for the company and this is evident in studies measuring levels of productivity.

The Tesla Gigafactory

While Boeing Everett has led the pack for decades, the Tesla Gigafactory in Nevada, America has increased its facility's size, scale and production tenfold. The original enterprise has grown to keep up with the brand's demand for electric vehicles. The warehouse is used for production of batteries and motors for Tesla cars and other energy storage solutions. Tesla has plans to expand its Gigafactory into the world's largest building covering over 10 million square feet. The aim is to have the warehouse fully powered by renewable energy.

Amazon Fulfilment Centre

Based in Tennessee, America the Amazon MQY1 Fulfilment Centre is leading the way for e-commerce warehousing. Amazon has warehouses all over the world for the distribution and storage of its millions of products. However, the largest of these is the one in Tennessee spanning 3,6 million square feet and five levels of automated warehouse space. It has 80,000 square feet of office space and is one of the biggest fulfilment hubs in the United States.
